Getting to know your roof! What are PVC fascias and soffits and how do they differ?

Most elements of your roof are extremely easy to identify, such as tiles and guttering. However, it is also helpful to know a little bit about other key parts of your roof – whether this is to help you recognise potential problems or better understand sales and trades people.

Three such important elements are fascias, soffits and bargeboards.

What is a PVC Fascia?

A PVC fascia board is the long, straight board that runs along the lower edge of the roof where it meets the outer walls of the house. It is responsible for supporting both the lower edge of the bottom row of roof tiles, as well as providing protection to the roof rafters and carrying the guttering – which is no mean feat when in a downpour a roof on a standard house could be washing several gallons of water per second into the guttering.

What is a PVC soffit?

A soffit is a flat board that is tucked away under the fascia board. It covers the roof overhang from below and protects the exposed part of the roof between the external wall and the fascia. As this area is ‘boxed’ in it is important to consider ventilation to prevent condensation forming. Most soffits come with built in ventilation, however, you can also choose ‘over fascia’ ventilation, which allows air to flow between the roof and the fascia board without affecting roof protection.

What is a Bargeboard?

A bargeboard is essentially the same physical product as a fascia but is used on the gable end of a house rather than around the edge of the roof. A bargeboard not only provides protection, but it also adds a stylish finish to your home.

Style and substance

All three elements – fascias, soffits and bargeboards – are visible on the outside of your property and as such have a huge effect on the finished look of your home. This is why these roofing components are now available in a wide range of colours, from traditional white to contemporary anthracite grey, and designs to allow you to choose a style that blends beautifully with your house.

It is also important to remember that fascias, soffits and bargeboards support guttering and roof tiles, both of which provide protection to your home from the elements. Because of this it is essential to maintain these PVC elements to prevent blockages caused by nests and other debris that can gather in exposed areas.
