What is The Best Way to Clean Soffits And Fascias?

Keeping your soffit and fascias clean not only improves the appearance of your home, but it also keeps your roofline in good working order. This blog looks at the best ways to clean your soffit and fascias, whilst keeping you safe.

What Equipment Will I Need?

The equipment you need will depend on whether you plan to use a pressure washer or not.

With a pressure washer

  • A pressure washer

  • Detergent or washing liquid Without a pressure washer

  • A bucket

  • Sponge

  • Detergent or washing liquid

  • Ladder

  • Garden hose

Safety Considerations

Safety should be your number one priority when cleaning your soffits and fascias, even if you’re working on a single-story building. Here are a few hints and tips to keep you, and those around you, safe.

  • When working at height, ensure that you use a safe, sturdy ladder and have a secure base for your ladder before you start. It’s also a good idea to ask a friend, family member, or neighbour to hold the bottom of the ladder while you work.

  • If you are using a cleaning detergent, consider wearing protective eye wear to prevent any cleaning fluid from going into your eyes.

  • If using a particularly strong cleaning detergent, wearing gloves will help to protect your skin and prevent any reactions.

  • Keep children away from the area whilst you are cleaning, especially if you are using a detergent.

  • Finally, have a chat with your neighbours to let them know that you will be cleaning your fascias and soffits!

Cleaning Soffits And Fascias: Step by Step

Using a pressure washer

A pressure washer is the easiest – and safest – way of cleaning your soffit and fascias. They can tackle even the most ground on dirt and you can keep your feet firmly on the ground.

  1. Firstly soak the area well with clean water to remove any loose dirt and debris. Use the low pressure at this point to prevent the dirt going behind your soffit and fascias.

  2. Add a detergent to your pressure washer and repeat the above step, remembering to still use a low pressure.

  3. Leave the detergent for a while to enable it to work its magic. In the meantime, change your pressure washer to a high pressure setting and nozzle. It’s a good idea to run clean water through your washer (spraying it into a safe place) to remove any detergent.

  4. Spray your soffit and fascia with the pressure washer to remove any final dirt and detergent residue.

  5. A final spray with the low setting on your pressure washer will help to leave a sparkling finish.

Without a pressure washer

Don’t worry if you do not have access to a pressure washer, you can still get your soffit and fascias clean. You will need to use a ladder so only use this method if you’re comfortable with heights.

  1. Fill a large bucket with warm water and add your chosen detergent or washing fluid.

You can also add a few tablespoons of bleach if you have particularly stubborn patches

    of mildew.

  2. Soak your sponge in the water and clean the soffit and fascias as far as you can safely

    reach from your ladder.

  3. Use a garden hose to rinse the area you’ve just cleaned, before moving your ladder on

to the next section and repeating the process.
