Do You Need Planning Permission For External Cladding?

Do You Need Planning Permission For External Cladding?

Planning permission is not usually required for the installation of external cladding, as it falls within your ‘Permitted Development Rights’. But what does this mean? And are there any situations where you may need to apply for planning permission? This blog aims to answer both questions.

What is Permitted Development?

Permitted Development Rights were created by the Government to allow homeowners to extend or renovate their homes without having to gain planning permission. These rights do not extend to flats or maisonettes, and there are a few exceptions where planning permission will be required. This is explored in more detail below.

However, for most homeowners, installing external cladding will fall under ‘Permitted Development Rights’ and you will not have to seek permission before starting your project.

When is Planning Permission Required For External Cladding?

As mentioned above, there are exceptions to the rule when it comes to needing planning permission for external cladding. These include if you live in a house which is:

  • A listed building

  • Located in a National Park

  • Located in a Conservation Area

  • Located in an Area of Outstanding Beauty

If any of these apply to you, we would recommend contacting your local planning authority to talk about your project and to determine if you need to apply for planning permission. Likewise, if your home does not fall within any of the above criteria, but you are still unsure of your rights, contact your local authority just to be sure – it’ll be worth it for peace of mind!
