Autumn Essentials
As we move into Autumn and the weather starts to turn colder, it is time to turn your attention to your home and prepare it for those chillier months. Here are a few tips to help you get your home winter-ready.
Getting your garden ready for winter
You may not be able to spend as much time relaxing and entertaining in your garden during the colder months, but this doesn't mean you should neglect your garden entirely. Now is the perfect time to prepare your outside space for the coming winter.
If you have a decked area, make sure the boards are swept clean of all debris. This will stop mould from building up. If you have a timber deck, this may be a good time to ensure it is properly protected from the elements with the most appropriate treatments. If you are lucky enough to have a
composite decked area, just a sweep and a rinse will help keep it looking good all winter. While you're outside, check your trees and hedges to see if they need trimming. Cutting back any overhanging branches will help to keep your gutters clear of debris. September is also a good time to give your lawn some TLC if needed.
Clean gutters and check guttering
This is the perfect time to clean out your gutters. This will help to prevent any blockages, which if left, can cause damage to your drainage system and home. While you're up there, you can also assess the condition of your guttering and determine if any repairs need to be done before the wet weather arrives.
It is also important to ensure you have the right guttering for your home - for example, for a traditional semi-detached or terrace a standard half-round or half-square guttering system should be sufficient. But if you have a larger detached home or a commercial property, you may need to consider a deep or Ogee gutter, which can better manage large quantities of water.
Review your roof
Check your roof for loose or cracked tiles. You can ask a roofer to do this, or simply take a few steps back, look up and have a walk around your home! You can also go up into the loft and look for signs of water damage or holes, which may suggest there are issues with your roof.
Dismiss those drafts
Eliminating drafts will not only help keep you warmer during the colder months, but it could also help reduce your energy bills. Investing in new external doors will not only help keep the warmth in but will also make your home more secure. If this is not an option, draft excluders and curtains are effective ways of eliminating those drafts.
