Preventing Mould in Bathrooms: 5 Tips

Preventing Mould in Bathrooms: 5 Tips

Mould is not only unsightly, leaving black marks on walls and tiles, but it is also unhygienic. Understanding how mould develops is a good starting point for helping to prevent it.

What Causes Mould?

There are several reasons mould develops. The first, and most common, is condensation. Condensation occurs when moist air meets a colder surface, such as a wall, mirror, or window. The air can’t hold the moisture and drops of water appear. This also occurs in places where the air is still, for example behind furniture or in corners of a room.

A second cause of mould is penetrating damp, where moisture comes into a home through damage to the fabric of the building. A final cause is rising damp, which is caused by a building having no or a defunct damp course.

Tips for Preventing Mould in Bathrooms

Penetrating and rising damp can be remedied by identifying the cause and fixing the issue – either yourself or by hiring a professional. However, condensation can be prevented by following these few simple tips:

Regular Cleaning

Keeping a room clean on a regular basis is a simple and straight forward way of helping to prevent moisture build up.

Removing Excess Moisture

Wiping surfaces clean of moisture, particularly in those rooms which are prone to a build-up such as bathrooms, shower rooms and kitchens, will help to prevent moisture accumulation and consequently mould.

Allow Curtains and Rugs to Dry

If moisture does get into a room ensuring that all materials, such as shower curtains, bathmats or rugs, are left open or hung up for a while will help them to dry more effectively and prevent the creation of mould.

Ventilation

Ventilation is key to preventing condensation and mould. Keeping windows open whilst showering, bathing, or cooking will help, whilst installing a fan will enable you to ventilate a room all year round.

Plants

Not only to do plants look beautiful and create a calming ambience, but they also help to draw moisture out of the air, reducing the amount of condensation and preventing mould.

Do Bathroom Wall Panels Prevent Mould?

Bathroom wall panels are the perfect addition to any room that has high levels of condensation. They are 100% waterproof and unlike traditional ceramic tiles, they require no grout - a known breeding ground for mould. Their construction also means that there are no gaps or cracks through which water can creep meaning damp and mould can not accumulate behind the panels.

Wall panels are also incredibly easy to maintain. Condensation can be removed easily, and they require only a quick wipe with a warm damp cloth to keep them looking like new.
