All about composite decking - what you need to know!

All about composite decking - what you need to know!

Firstly, what is composite decking?

Many of you may have a preconceived idea of what Wood Polymer Composite (WPC) is – plastic, unsustainable, harmful to the environment, ugly. However, the reality is quite opposite. WPC is a combination of wood fibres - usually around 55% - recycled plastics - usually 45% of high-density polyethylene, otherwise known as recycled plastic milk bottles - and bonding agents.

All these materials are heated together, formed into boards, and then cooled. The result is a high-quality, long-lasting, environmentally friendly deck board that is made from 95% recycled and sustainably sourced materials and has all the beauty of timber but the practicalities of plastic.

What are the benefits of WPC decking?

Where do we start! WPC boards are rot and split resistant, so they keep their integrity and appearance a lot longer than traditional timber, and are slip resistant and splinter free, making them safe and comfortable underfoot in any weather. Unlike its timber alternative, WPC is also virtually maintenance free – it doesn’t need any treatments or paints to protect it from the elements, and only requires an occasional clean to keep it looking its best.

Finally, composite decking is specifically designed to be extremely long lasting and often comes with an extended warranty, for example our Woodgrain, Ribbed and Grooved, and Essential ranges all come with lengthy warranties. This is compared to their wood decking equivalent which may only last five years.

Strong foundations

Did you know that it is not just decking boards that can be made from composite? The frame on which your decked area sits, the substructure, can also be constructed from the same WPC material. This means that, unlike a traditional wooden frame which may rot within five years of installation, your sub structure will be just as strong and long lasting as your boards.

Champions of sustainability

It may surprise you to hear that composite decking can be the most environmentally sound option when choosing your decking. Firstly, it’s composition is usually a combination of sustainably sourced and recycled material. In turn, the board itself can be recycled numerous times, creating a totally sustainable life cycle. Secondly, WPC does not require regular treatments, the application of which can release toxins into the environment. Lastly, composite deck boards are designed to last. This means they do not need to be replaced as often as timber, which helps preserve material and reduces the need for transportation.

The lifetime value of your decking

When choosing new decking, you will probably consider price, look and quality. However, it is worth having a think about the lifetime value and cost of the decking. For example, how long is the decking supposed to last; what maintenance does it need; does it come with a warranty?

Starting from the bottom up, choosing a WPC substructure over a timber one will significantly lengthen the life of your decking. It will not rot, warp, or move like a wooden frame, which will make your decking more stable and secure, and ultimately, last longer.

Next, research thoroughly what maintenance your new decking will require to keep it looking perfect and, more importantly, safe. Timber decking will most likely require a yearly treatment to protect it from the weather, which can not only be time consuming but also costly. Standing water and debris, such as moss and leaves, will also cause damage to a wooden deck if left, so regular cleaning is a must to maintain its appearance and longevity. On the other hand, composite decking does not need any treatments or paints, and an occasional rinse with warm water will keep it looking brand new – saving both time and money.

Lastly, warranties. Most WPC decking solutions will come with a significant warranty providing you with the peace of mind that you’ve bought a product that has been designed to last. Timber decking will not carry the same length of warranty.

Overall, when looking at the lifetime value of your decking, there is only really one choice!

Decking dilemma – making the right choice

Choosing the best decking material for you and your project can be confusing. The first instinct of many people will be to opt for traditional timber. However, we would urge anyone who has dismissed composite in the past to give it another look. If you’re looking for a long lasting, stylish, safe, and sustainable decking solution, then WPC could be for you.
