How Much Does it Cost to Renovate a Bathroom?

How Much Does it Cost to Renovate a Bathroom?

For many of us, one of the key considerations when undertaking a bathroom renovation will be cost. Whilst costs can vary widely, in this blog we aim to provide you with a rough guide on what you should consider when planning a budget for your new bathroom.

What is the Average Cost of a Bathroom Renovation in the UK?

The good news is that a new bathroom should not be out of your reach. By planning well, researching your options and being flexible, you should be able to achieve a beautiful bathroom without breaking the bank.

Whilst final costs will depend on your plans for your new bathroom, the average price for a complete bathroom renovation in the UK is around £6,000 to £7,000. Although you will not have a definitive price until you research and compare costs, having an average cost in mind will help to better manage your budget, focus your mind, and prevent frivolous choices!

What to Consider

There are many factors to consider when pricing a new bathroom.

Plumbing

Whether you will be doing the plumbing yourself or employing the services of a professional, careful planning is a must to avoid an escalation of costs.

The ideal scenario is to use your existing plumbing layout, which will save you both time and money. If you are thinking of rearranging your bathroom furniture, you may have to also move water supplies and pipework. This could mean breaking into walls and installing brand new pipework. Not only will this cost in terms of materials, but this work should only be carried out by a skilled expert, which will significantly increase the price of the renovation.

Considering the layout of your bathroom should be done at the very beginning of your project, to enable you to estimate the costs more accurately you need to attribute.

Electrics

Depending on which electrical fixtures and fittings you need, you should be able to keep your electrical costs at a minimum – especially if you are using existing connections. However, there are several fixtures you should consider when it comes to electrics. These include:

  • Fans
  • Power outlets
  • Lighting
  • Circuits

When it comes to electrics, we would always recommend using the services of a professional to ensure everything is installed safely and in accordance with industry standards.

Labour

Labour costs will vary depending on which tradespeople you use and their hourly or daily rates. If possible, choose your professional based on recommendations – either from friends and family or online – to give you peace of mind that your renovation will be completed to a high standard.

Fittings & Fixtures

The cost of your fittings and fixtures will depend largely on the choices you make. For example, a bath can cost you on average anywhere from £100 to £3,000; a toilet £90 to £600; a shower £60 to £700; and a basin from £70 to £300. You have control over how much you spend on your fittings and fixtures – the only danger is getting carried away! So try and keep your budget in mind when you start choosing those finishing touches.

Walls & Floors

As with fixtures and fittings, you have quite a lot of control over how much you decide to spend on wall and floor coverings. There are now myriad options available, from traditional ceramic tile to contemporary PVC wall panels. Each will have an associated cost, but we would also recommend looking at the lifetime costs of your chosen wall and floor coverings.

For example, tile is the most popular choice, but they can be brittle and prone to developing mould, and may need replacing after a time. Whereas PVC bathroom wall panels are waterproof, durable, and hygienic, and will most likely last a lot longer than their ceramic counterparts.

Variables

In addition to labour and fittings and fixtures, there are other variables which may have an affect on the cost of your new bathroom.

Size of Project

This may sound obvious, but the size of the room you are renovating will have a bearing on the cost. A larger room may require more lights, more wall and floor coverings, and potentially larger fixtures and fittings than a smaller bathroom – all of which will come at a cost.

Layout Changes

As mentioned above, using existing plumbing and electrical circuits will greatly reduce the cost of a bathroom renovative. However, if you are looking to rearrange your bathroom layout, you must be prepared for the additional associated costs. These costs will predominantly be for specialist labour, as well as new materials such as piping. If you are wanting to change the floor plan of your bathroom, factoring it into your initial budget will help prevent unexpected cost surprises later down the line.

Materials, Fixtures & Fitting

There is a vast array of fixtures, fittings, and materials available, all at varying prices. Choosing quality accessories will obviously come at a price, but this doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune to create a stunning bathroom.
