How to Hang Bathroom Furniture on Wall Panels

How to Hang Bathroom Furniture on Wall Panels

Mirrors, towel rails, toilet roll holders, and cabinets are all features of a bathroom wall, adding both practicality and style. But can you hang these on bathroom wall panels?

This blog aims to answer this question and provide you with advice and guidance on the best way to approach fixing items to your panelled bathroom wall.

Can you Hang Bathroom Furniture on Wall Panels?

You can hang bathroom furniture on wall panels, but there are a few factors to consider before you start. A wall panel itself is not strong enough to support items such as cupboards, mirrors, or towel rails, so it is important to consider the wall beneath, as this is what will be supporting your fixtures and fittings.

Fixing screws into a wall panel is fairly straightforward. We would first recommend that you puncture or pilot (creating a small hole in the panel before you start drilling) to prevent cracks or splits in the panel. Secondly, you should choose your driver. A screwdriver, combi drill, or impact driver can all be used, but whichever tool you choose it is recommended to drive the screw in very slowly – again to prevent any damage to the panel.

The size of the screws you use will all depend on the item you’re hanging, the thickness of the wall panel and the type of wall beneath. Installation instructions for the item will have recommendations on the correct screws to use, and, if you’re still unsure, the wall panel manufacturer should be able to offer help and guidance.

Can you hang mirrors on Wall Panels?

Yes, you can hang mirrors on wall panels! Our five-step guide will hopefully help you hang your new mirror successfully:

Step 1

Using a pipe or wire detector, check the wall onto which you want to hang your mirror for concealed pipes.

Step 2

Position your mirror – this is often easier with some help! – and mark your drill holes. Many mirrors will have pre-drilled holes for hanging, so you can use these as a guide.

Step 3

Use a fine drill or bradawl to pilot or puncture the holes.

Step 4

If you are drilling into a solid wall, use a masonry bit and wall plugs. Drill the holes to the required depth and fit the wall plugs. If you are drilling into plasterboard, drive a good quality screw using the pilot holes. Remember to leave the required length of screw to allow you to hang your mirror!

Step 5

To ensure that your wall panel remains waterproof, it is a good idea to use silicone sealant around the screw to seal the hole. You can now hang your mirror!

How to use Wall Panels to work around fixtures

Wall panels are extremely easy to cut, which makes fitting them around existing fixtures simple and straightforward. There are also options to work with fixtures such as shower wall panels.

Firstly, measure your panel and mark out the required shape. You can then choose your cutting method:

Jigsaw

You will need to use a jigsaw if you’re cutting irregular shapes to accommodate fixtures and fittings. Always use a firm and stable work bench or table and cut the panel with the decorative side down.

Handsaw

For more straight forward cuts i.e. cutting a panel in half or removing a regular width, you can use a handsaw with a fine tooth. Again, use a stable bench or table and always cut the panel with the decorative side down.

If you’re cutting a panel to fit around a pipe, we would recommend leaving a minimum of 5mm clearance around the pipe. For larger holes, you can drill the panel first with the largest drill possible, before cutting. This will help you cut a more accurate and tidier hole.
